In case you missed it on our social media channels last week, we posted about the seventh of nine recurring sub-themes in confirmation and related practices found in our qualitative research—Local Flavor—plus an illustrative church portrait. Stay tuned for the last two sub-themes, and portraits illustrating them, in the coming weeks!

Subtheme 7: Local Flavor
Portrait: Union Coffee
Union Coffee, both a coffee shop and an innovative congregation of The United Methodist Church in the Dallas, TX University Crossing neighborhood just down the street from SMU, is a great example of LOCAL FLAVOR in confirmation, our 7th sub-theme! “The rite of confirmation [specifically designed for people in their 20s rather than 12- and 13-year-olds] is renewable, participants are asked to travel though confirmation every two years. Other components are a ‘Bento Box’ of spiritual disciplines created by each participant, a individual ‘Union Way Buddy’ joins in the journey for four months, and the writing of a personal creed and meeting with Pastor Mike.” You can read Union’s portrait at https://goo.gl/kWB2j3!
