How Do Presbyterian Churches USA Do Confirmation? Denominational Learnings Part 1

Today and over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing our learnings particular to each of the five denominations we researched. Since our researchers Katie Douglass and Jacob Sorenson presented findings from The Confirmation Project at the Association of Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE) annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky yesterday and today (1/30-1/31-2018), we think it seems fitting to begin with sharing our learnings about the Presbyterian Churches USA!

Our research showed that each PCUSA congregation worked with a common set of ingredients to make their own “recipe” for confirmation. Using the same ingredients, the portion of each was adjusted to arrive at the desired flavor or taste they hoped for based on their goals and understandings, congregational assets and challenges, and contextual realities. The ingredients include time, content, leadership, teaching and learning methods, statement of faith, and relationships, all blended within that congregation’s particular context.
